[2024:44] Opening Sutra, Richard Fenwick

It would do us well
to open with a song devoted to us,
one that emerges like the moon
as it crests each
of the eastern mountains.

Teach me yours,
show me how it complicates you.
I will listen to your chorus,
memorize you and let your lines
take root within me.

Listen to mine
with all of its sharps and flats,
and you may see the ways
I struggle in this world as well.

If you’d like, we can coil together
and mix us in the harmonies of purpose.

Let’s learn each other’s words
and celebrate our crescendos.
Let’s open our lives with a song
of our own making,
then listen as the stars become

our choir of reciprocities.
