[36] Om, John Delaney

Arches National Park, Utah

In this world of exaltations,
something visceral rises up
from the vortex, steadies its tone
above the fracas
of the swirling stone.

What form of time
passing through,
leaving no trace
but its exiting,
could so spellbind you?

In the desert wind, Earth’s handle
slips from Sky’s grasp,
but its voice, like a magnet, grips
this moment firm, and won’t let go.

Depicted on Utah license plates, Delicate Arch has become an iconic symbol of the Southwest. It was not included in the original park boundaries.
