As we listen to brown squirrels tousle with the Stellar’s jays
outside this window, our quiet breathing isn’t warm bread
in a basket. As we lie in each other’s arms, you touch my hand

and say, Don’t worry. Outside our red house, pale stars
that wake soldiers at dawn in another country… In the nests
in naked alders, jays screech, seem to have the last say.
